Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow Spinoff Cancelled by HBO

Game of Thrones' Jon Snow Spinoff Cancelled by HBO

Summary

  • Jon Snow fans will be disappointed, because the Kit Harrington-led Game of Thrones spin-off has been officially cancelled by HBO.
  • HBO is constantly considering new stories for the
    Game of Thrones
franchise, but very few will actually make it to the screen.
  • Meanwhile, Kit Harrington stars in the film
    Blood for Dust
    .

As Game of Thrones fans count down the months to House of the Dragon‘s return on June 16, Jon Snow lovers will have to wait much longer for his return, if it happens at all. The Jon Snow spin-off that was in development has now been cancelled by HBO five years after the acclaimed Game of Thrones series premiered its final episode. There were several projects in development until House of the Dragon was chosen as the great successor, but many others are still waiting to see the light of day. One of them was Snow, a series starring Kit Harington reprising his iconic role.

“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed,” Harrington told Screenrant, “and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.” He added:

And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.

Although Jon Snow became one of the great heroes of the series and one of the most beloved characters, obviously his spinoff did not go as expected. In fact, none of the other Game of Thrones projects except for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight are guaranteed at this stage. Speaking with TVLine in November 2023, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys confirmed this:

We always have
Game of Thrones
scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring. I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.

What the Jon Snow Series Might Have Looked Like

Still from Game of Thrones.
HBO

Jon Snow is one of the characters whose epic journey spanned the eight seasons of Game of Thrones, going from being part of the Stark family to part of the Night’s Watch, to living with the Wildlings, to discovering that his true identity was that of Aegon Targaryen and was heir to the Iron Throne. After all that, his murder of Daenerys Targaryen sees Jon Snow sent back to the North of the Wall with the Wildlings.

Snow would’ve been the first series in the Game of Thrones universe to take place after the events of the original series instead of being a prequel. It would also have to be written without any kind of source material, since there is no book within Martin’s biography that explores Jon Snow’s life beyond the end of the main saga. Which the author hasn’t even finished writing yet.

Therefore, the potential plot of the series centered on Jon Snow would have to be completely original, although it would surely not have been very different from the adventures that the character experienced during his time away from the Starks and Westeros, discovering the most remote corners of the kingdom and meeting with all kinds of characters.

Snow could’ve also featured the return of some of the big Game of Thrones stars whose characters survived the finale, like Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark, who also decided to live her own adventures away from Winterfell and could’ve easily crossed paths with Jon at some point. However, it looks we’ll never know what Snow might’ve gotten up to.

House of the Dragon, meanwhile, will be released June 16, 2024. You can watch the first season below:
