Season 1 of Prime Video’s Fallout has established the post-apocalyptic world and the characters that inhabit it, and, according to the showrunners, season 2 will test them even further. Set in an alternate future where Cold-War fear and resource wars lead to nuclear armageddon in the year 2077, Fallout takes place 200 years after the bombs drop, exploring the weird wasteland and its weirder survivors and their factions. One such survivor is Lucy (Ella Purnell), a member of an underground Vault who journeys above ground to find her missing father.
Season 1 juxtaposed the harsh reality of the Wasteland with Lucy’s optimistic, can-do attitude, testing her limits as she encounters more and more violent characters. Showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner recently sat down with THR to discuss the upcoming second season and how Lucy’s character will be developed further. Season 2 asks “will Lucy be able to hang on to her core?” says Wagner.

A product of the vault she grew up in, Lucy views the world through rose-tinted glasses, believing every problem in the Wasteland can be talked down, which Wagner describes as a classic “nature vs. nurture question.” In the upcoming second season, Wagner and Robertson-Dworet want to test how optimistic Lucy can remain, Wagner continued:
“Has her time in a happy cozy vault steeled her against that? We will find out. What we’re already into in Season 2 is exploring how far we want to push this character, how much do we want to see her hang onto to herself. It becomes the game of the show in its own way.”
Fallout’s Showrunners Were Scared That Lucy Might Be Annoying
The fish out of water trope is a hard storytelling device to pull off. If audiences are as clueless about the world as the main character, then the effect doesn’t work. If audiences put the pieces together too quickly, then the character comes off as naive and annoying. Wagner and Robertson-Dworet were very concerned about audiences perceiving Lucy this way when they were writing the show. However, they both agree that Ella Purnell’s killer performance helped balance the character’s naivety and optimism. Robertson-Dworet said:
“It was a huge relief to us to know that Ella is an incredible performer who makes sure that Lucy is not annoying. We were very scared that our main character was a bit annoying because she’s a very privileged person and we kind of resent her for that. She comes from the world of haves and she goes into a world of have nots, and she certainly starts the season thinking she knows better than them and being a little judgy of the people she meets for what they are willing to do to survive.”.
Fallout season 2 is currently in pre-production as Wagner and Robertson-Dworet, along with executive producer Jonathan Nolan, plan out the continuation of the story. No plot details have been revealed by anyone involved. However, considering the ending of season 1, audiences can expect season 2 to begin to move away from the show’s California setting towards Nevada as Fallout travels to New Vegas.
