Since its debut in 2019, the TV series Evil has gathered a cult-like following and built up a loyal fan base who have followed the show from its origins on CBS to its streaming home of Paramount+. Some call it horror, while others call it supernatural drama, but Evil isn’t really something you can put a label on, thanks to its wide range of themes, subjects, and willingness to bend whatever genre rules are placed in front of it. While each season has gotten progressively better and garnered more praise than the last, all good things must come to an end, and on May 23, 2024, the final season of Evil begins its run.
MovieWeb caught up with Evil stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi, who have headlined the series since its inception as three vastly different characters tasked with investigating supernatural occurrences for the Catholic Church. We spoke about what they’ll miss, what was the most fun for them throughout the show, and what fans can expect from the final season.

Katja Herbers isn’t a mother, but she plays one on TV. As forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, she’s mom to four young girls in the series, played by talented actresses Brooklyn Shuck, Skylar Gray, Maddy Crocco, and Dalya Knapp. Their chemistry on-screen is truly a wonder to watch and is perhaps the most relatable thing about Evil to the layperson who might not know what it’s like to see and hunt demons but knows about parenting, sisterhood, and the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. It’s a connection Herbers says they’ll have forever:
“
I think I’ll probably have a connection with them for the rest of my life.
They call me up when they have a problem. It’s been in such formative years of their lives, and they look at me as like a second Mommy and I really like having that role. When we started out filming this show,
I wanted to try to be as close to them as possible
to make this thing as real as possible, and it just has resulted in a very genuine bond.”
“Not just between me and them, but also them as sisters.”
Herbers would go on to praise the girls’ talents, saying, “They’re very good at improvising. They’re very loose. I really like what we’ve set up where they all talk over each other constantly, and for some reason, Kristen is the only one that understands what they’re saying because she can read them and be like, ‘I got it.’”

The third season of Evil recently concluded on Paramount+, and it still remains a wonderfully bizarre, silly, but nonetheless horrific TV show.
Mike Colter’s Character David Acosta Is Vastly Different From Him
Mike Colter is most recognized by fans as Luke Cage, a role he portrayed in the Marvel series of the same name and in The Defenders, both of which began on Netflix. In Evil, he takes on the role of David Acosta, a former journalist studying to be a Catholic priest, who wrestles with his faith and beliefs over the course of the series. “He’s so different than I am,” says Colter. “From the clothes that he wears, everything about him is pretty different.”
Mike Colter Supports a Luke Cage Recasting, But Remains Open to a Return
Mike Colter says he’ll be right there to cheer on whoever plays the next Luke Cage if the role ends up getting recast for the MCU.
Colter reminisced about one of his favorite episodes, which fell in Season 1 and was titled “Fathers.” It saw David and Kristen travel upstate to visit David’s estranged father and ended up with the duo tripping on hallucinogenic drugs, proving once more that in Evil, things aren’t always as they seem.
“I love the episode where we go visit my dad upstate, and we do this whole thing where we have the psilocybin trip,
and that is one of my favorite episodes
. It’s the cornfield. I just love the hysteria, and the shock, and the audacity of it all.”
For Colter, those elements of shock and awe, as well as Evil’s quieter moments, have resulted in him finding joy in the character of David Acosta, who he says is more interesting than himself.
“I just love experiencing who David is, and I think
it’s why I’m in this business
, because I just find other characters much more interesting to play than myself. Sometimes I really just
want to see what David’s gonna do next
. It’s fun. It’s really fun.”

Aasif Mandvi Thinks Fans Will Be Satisfied with How Evil Ends
While Aasif Mandvi has appeared in a plethora of films and TV shows over the years, fans will most likely recognize him from The Daily Show, where he appeared as a correspondent from 2006 to 2017. In Evil, he portrays the pragmatic Ben Shakir, who works to debunk the supernatural occurrences the team investigates by providing a scientific explanation.
Though the first three seasons of Evil have taken fans on a wild ride across several different roads, Mandvi says that this final season is going to be a “thrill ride.” Created by Robert and Michelle King, he thinks fans will be pleased with the ending they’ve devised, which will lead to a satisfying conclusion for everyone.
“I think it’s a thrill ride.
It’s going to be a thrill ride
. I think the audience will really love where we take the show. Lots of twists and turns throughout the season.
I think we land the plane pretty well
. And I think it’s gonna be bumpy and fun.”
