Despite not being as historically accurate as some other films, Les Mayfield’s American Outlaws is one of the most entertaining Westerns out there. The plot follows five friends who return home to a Midwest town after the war in 1865, only to discover that a corrupt railroad baron is trying to seize the land from farmers without their knowledge.

Streaming May 1

Buck and the Preacher, released in 1972, addresses an often-ignored subject: the experiences of Black people during the Civil War. Starring Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, the movie is set in the wake of the Civil War, when Buck, a guide-turned-soldier who helps escaped slaves find settlements, meets the Preacher, a con artist who accompanies him on his quest. Even though they don’t get along at first, when a gang of bounty hunters attempts to recapture the fleeing slaves, the two put their differences aside to aid the weak by fighting the common enemy. Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973)

Streaming May 1

Cahill U.S. Marshal, directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, is a Western starring John Wayne. In the film, J. D. Cahill is the fiercest Marshall in the town and simply hearing his name is enough to stop outlaws in their tracks. However, when his own sons join a gang and rob a bank, he must prioritize his duty and teach them a lesson. While not one of Wayne’s best films by any margin, it is definitely an underappreciated Western that deserves more recognition. Cahill U.S. Marshal is now streaming on May 1.

Chisum (1970)

Streaming May 1

Chisum, released in 1970, is an excellent Western that was well ahead of its time. It’s another Western starring John Wayne, and he played John Chisum to perfection. In the film, John Chisum, one of the founders of the Lincoln town, learns about Lawrence Murphy, a businessman and gunman who begins taking over the local shops and lands by shady means.

Although Chisum and his comrades try to use the law against the ruthless man, Murphy also owns that. With no other choice, Chisum takes matters into his own hands, beginning the infamous Lincoln County War. In addition to John Wayne, the film also stars Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, and Glen Corbett. Chisum is now streaming on Tubi.

Dances With Wolves is one of the most magnificent Western films ever made, and it takes a novel approach to telling a story about losing oneself.
