Every TV Show on HBO Max in April 2024

Every TV Show on HBO Max in April 2024

The level of quality programming at Max has always been top-notch, and next month will be no exception. While last month only brought a pair of new selections for viewers to choose from, April has twice that amount. However, there isn’t necessarily a wide variety of genres. Nonetheless, there will still be plenty of offerings available that most audiences will find entertaining and should absolutely add to their respective watchlists.

In true Max fashion, the handful of shows heading to the streaming service next month have award-winning potential, which means they must be impressive. With two documentary shows, a comedic reality series, and a satirical thriller with a recent Academy Award-winning actor at the helm, there is plenty of content for Max subscribers to enjoy in the coming weeks. No matter what a viewer might find appealing, the numerous series available next month are objectively worth checking out.

The Synanon Fix (Limited Series)

Stream on Apr. 1

The Synanon Fix is a four-part docuseries about Chuck Dederich and the organization Synanon, which he founded in 1958 with his wife, Betty. Initially a slew of rehab facilities meant to help heroin addicts who weren’t welcomed at places like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Synanon eventually devolved into a cult by the 1970s. Although nonviolent in the beginning, the organization eventually utilized violence via an internal military type of force known as the “Imperial Marines.” Those who attempted to leave Synanon risked physical violence, as well as those who threatened the organization in any way.

As Dederich’s leadership pushed the organization toward more extreme beliefs and ideals, charges of child abuse, assault, and even attempted murder emerged. Told from the perspective of Synanon’s former members, the documentary explores how the organization’s potential for prosperity and positive world change ultimately grew into something more sinister and dangerous. The Synanon Fix is streaming on Max on Apr. 1.

The Sympathizer (Limited Series)

Stream on Apr. 14

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer is a satirical espionage thriller about a communist spy, known as the Captain (Hoa Xuande), who’s taken refuge in the United States only to be recruited by the CIA for counterintelligence. Originally a North Vietnamese plant inside the Southern Vietnamese Army, the Captain is forced to flee his country during the final days of the Vietnam War.

Netflix’s The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping is considered one of the most difficult documentaries on the platform to watch. Here is why.

Widely credited with Durst’s arrest, filmmakers Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier have also been criticized for blurring the line between storytelling and journalism and possibly sitting on critical evidence before turning it over to law enforcement. Regardless, the trio is back with The Jinx: Part Two, which will cover the years following the original series and include new interviews, new material, and Durst’s prison phone calls. The Jinx: Part Two will stream on Max on Apr. 21.
