Every TV Series Coming to Disney+ in May 2024

Every TV Series Coming to Disney+ in May 2024

Disney+ has become a big contender in the streaming world since its launch back in 2019. With its extensive library of classic Disney films, as well as its Marvel and Star Wars IP, the streaming platform could rightfully serve as a one-stop shop for many families. Given the numerous animated offerings the streaming service has available, it’s certainly a go-to destination for many households. That being said, next month has nothing but new and returning animated series headed to the streaming service, as well as a classic series adults will certainly love.

As May looms closer, it should be no surprise that Disney+ will have a new Star Wars offering, which children, as well as parents, will surely enjoy. Two other shows returning to the platform will likely only appeal to children. Parents hoping to watch either one with their kids will certainly find them amusing as well, given their ties to popular Disney brands. Of course, the long-awaited return of a beloved British series is also a notable addition to Disney’s May lineup. While there isn’t too much variety heading to the streaming service next month, each show promises to be chock-full of entertainment.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire (Limited Series)

Stream on May 4

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is a family-friendly animated series that is slated to hit Disney+ just in time for Star Wars Day. Set to premiere before the live-action series The Acolyte hits the platform in June, Tales of the Empire follows the story of two women on divergent paths, Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger). After losing everything and everyone close to her, Morgan navigates the Imperial world via her path of vengeance. On the flip side, Barriss is a former Jedi doing whatever she can to survive in a galaxy that is quickly changing. As they each make difficult decisions, their choices will ultimately define their destinies.

Similar to its predecessor, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, the latest series will have three episodes detailing Morgan’s story arc and three episodes covering Barriss’s story arc. The show isn’t meant to serve as an expansion of the established Star Wars canon so much as it’s meant to fill in some of the blanks other series have left behind. With Tales of the Empire, the backstories of two Ahsoka characters many fans already know will come into focus, and will hopefully answer any looming questions viewers might have.

Monsters at Work (Season 2)

Stream on May 5

Monsters at Work is an animated children’s series that takes place directly after the events of the first film in the Monsters, Inc. franchise. Following Henry J. Waternoose III’s (James Coburn) arrest, the factory officially makes the switch from screams to laughs in order to generate its power, with Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) now in charge of the factory’s operations. When a recent graduate from Monsters University named Tylor Tuskmon (Ben Feldman) arrives at the factory eager to work with his idol Sulley, he quickly learns that his Scare Major won’t do him any good. He’s reassigned to work as a mechanic on the Monsters Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT) while Mike and Sulley face the ups and downs of running a company.

As the series enters its second season, Tylor is no longer part of MIFT. He has become a jokester instead, finding a slew of friends along the way as he helps provide laughs for the factory. Unfortunately, he quickly finds himself questioning his abilities as he struggles to make children laugh. Given his talents as a scary monster, he wishes he could fulfill the dreams he once had and scare kids instead of trying to make them laugh. When he’s offered a position at a rival business known as Fear Co., Tylor’s job at Monsters, Inc. and the friendships he’s developed since he arrived are put at risk.

Doctor Who (Series 14)

Stream on May 10

As the brand-new home of Doctor Who, Disney+ is set to welcome the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and his newest companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), as they explore the universe across time and space in the TARDIS. First introduced in 2023’s Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road, the Doctor was drawn to Ruby thanks to her unnatural string of bad luck and his soft spot for humans. During their adventures, they’ll likely encounter new friends and enemies in war-torn future worlds as well as Regency-era London, and possibly meet the Doctor’s biggest enemy yet.

What will excite most fans of Doctor Who is the return of a key talent behind the scenes: Russell T. Davies, the original head writer and showrunner for the revived series from 2005 to 2010. That’s right, the lead creative during Christopher Eccelston and David Tennant’s portrayals of the Doctor will return once more for Ncuti Gatwa’s turn at the wheel, with the latter now co-existing alongside Gatwa’s Doctor after a special “bi-generation” event.

Chip is a nervous worrier, yet he is generally optimistic, while Dale is the laid-back daydreamer, which means they make the perfect odd couple primed for entertaining adventures. They may drive each other crazy, but they are the best of friends.

As the duo perpetually searches for acorns, they’re joined by a slew of other well-known iconic Disney characters who inevitably join them on their bigger-than-life adventures throughout the park. Ever the underdogs, Chip and Dale are no strangers to a bully or two, no matter how big or small.
