Every New and Returning Adult Animated Series on Netflix in 2024

Every New and Returning Adult Animated Series on Netflix in 2024

Thanks to recent hit TV series such as BoJack Horseman, Archer, Rick and Morty, and others, adult animation continues to expand beyond mainstream networks and find popularity on streaming platforms. In addition to hosting several beloved shows created by other studios and production companies, Netflix has become a power player in the adult-animated TV show landscape with such original shows as Big Mouth, Human Resources, Disenchantment, and others.

So far in 2024, Netflix has unveiled a few new adult animated TV shows and will host a handful of returning shows that have yet to conclude. While some are Netflix originals and some aren’t, the following streaming guide is designed to help fans of adult-animated TV shows know what’s coming down the pike for the first time and what popular series are slated to return for Netflix viewing.

9 Arcane (2021-Present)

Returning in November 2024

Release Date
November 6, 2021

Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee for the French animation studio Fortiche, Arcane is a popular and highly acclaimed series distributed by Netflix. Based on the video game Arcane: League of Legends, the violent adult-animated series follows sisters Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell) as the eternal war between the utopian Piltover City and dystopian Zaun rages on. Although the first season was released on Netflix in 2021, Season 2 is finally set for a November 2024 return.

Arcane has drawn critical plaudits for its superb animation, engaging characters, impressive worldbuilding, and emotional heft of the central performances. While video game adaptations often get a bad rap, Arcane ranks #28 on IMDb’s Top 250 TV Shows (9.0 rating), indicating its faithful storytelling and high quality across the board. Arcane won four Primetime Emmys in 2022, including Outstanding Animated Program for Episode 6, “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down.”

8 Big Mouth (2017-2024)

Returning for Series Finale in 2024 or 2025

Big Mouth

Big Mouth

Release Date
September 29, 2017

One of Netflix’s most popular original adult-animated shows, Big Mouth debuted in 2017 and is set to conclude in 2024. The romantic-comedy series concerns 7th-grade friends Nick (Nick Kroll) and Andrew (John Mulaney) as they navigate their awkward adolescence among their junior high school friends in New York. Big Mouth became so popular that it spawned the Netflix spin-off series, Human Resources, which concluded in 2023.

Big Mouth is bolstered by its talented comedic cast with plenty of adult-animated experience. Apart from Kroll and Mulaney, the show stars famous comedic actors Jason Mantzoukas, Maya Rudolph, Jordan Peele, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, and more. Rudolph won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. While there is no official return date for Big Mouth Season 8, some expect the show to be released at the end of 2024, while others believe it won’t hit Netflix until 2025.

Big Mouth is returning this fall and it feels like forever since we’ve seen our favorite Bridgeton Middle-schoolers and their various monsters.

7 Captain Laserhawk (2023-Present)

Returning for Season 2 in 2024

Dolph leads his team in Captain Laserhawk

Created by Adi Shankar, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is an adult-animated series that debuted on Netflix in 2023. Based on the video game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, the story takes place in an alternate history version of America in 1992. The U.S. is known as Eden, an oppressive technocracy ruled by the eponymous corporation behind a race of talking animal hybrids. The story concerns Dolph Laserhawk (Nathaniel Curtis), a hybridized supersoldier who leads a rebellion of “Ghosts” against the evil corporation.

The first season of Captain Laserhawk premiered in October 2023 and left viewers dangling on a massive cliffhanger in the finale. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long for it to be resolved, as it has been confirmed that Captain Laserhawk will return for Season 2 sometime in 2024 (via What’s On Netflix). Unfortunately, no exact release date has been given. IMDb classifies the show’s first season as a miniseries, which may pleasantly surprise some to see the show get an official Season 2 renewal.

6 Castlevania: Nocturne (2023)

Returns for Season 2 in 2024

Castlevania: Nocturne

Based on the popular Gothic horror video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, Castlevania: Nocturne debuted on Netflix in September 2023 and became an instant fan-favorite. Set during the French Revolution, the dark fantasy adult-animated series follows vampire slayer Richter Belmont as he tries to live up to his family’s name while defeating the omnipotent Vampire Messiah.

Serving as a sequel to the Castlevania animated series that ran on Netflix from 2017 to 2021, Nocturne has been hailed for its gripping storytelling, stylish visuals, and high dramatic stakes that Belmont and his adoptive sister Maria face every step of the way. Castlevania: Nocturne was named Best Adaptation at the 2023 Game Awards. While nothing is set in stone, Castlevania: Nocturne is expected to return to Netflix for Season 2 between November 2024 and early 2025.

5 Devil May Cry (2024-)

New to Netflix in 2024

Dante touches his head in Devil May Cry

Part of Adi Shankar’s Bootleg Universe along with Castlevania, Devil May Cry is another adult-animated video game adaptation set to hit Netflix in 2024. Based on the hit 2001 Capcom game of the same name, Devil May Cry concerns Dante, a wicked monster hunter tasked with preventing demonic infiltrations on Earth. The show was originally slated to air on Amazon Prime Video but was sold to Netflix, where the material was deemed the best fit.

In September 2023, Netflix teased a “first look” for Devil May Cry during the streamer’s Drop 01 live stream. While no exact release date for the upcoming video game adaptation has been provided, Devil May Cry is expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2024. The show will cover multiple seasons and features Virgil and Dante. Although cast details are unknown, Studio Mir will co-produce with Shankar.

4 Exploding Kittens (2024-)

New to Netflix in June 2024

A cat flies in Exploding Kittens

Based on the 2015 card game of the same name, Exploding Kittens is an adult-animated comedy series set to debut on Netflix in July 2024. The story involves God and Satan waging eternal war on Earth in the form of husky housecats. Lucifer star Tom Ellis is brilliantly cast as God Cat, with Suzy Nakamura, Kenny Yates, Ally Maki, David Gborie, Sasheer Zamata, and Mark Proksch rounding out the cast.

11 Adult Animated Shows That Aren’t Raunchy Comedies

While raunchy comedies like Family Guy might come to mind when thinking of adult animated shows, these 10 prove there’s so much more to tune into.

Exploding Kittens combines live-action with stop-motion animation to bring the Kickstarter card game to the small screen. The show had a first-look preview at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2023. While initially slated to be released in 2023, Exploding Kittens will debut on Netflix on July 10, 2024. A mobile tie-in game will be released shortly after the series.

3 Good Times (2024-Present)

New to Netflix in 2024

The Evans' sit on the sofa in Good Times

Debuting on April 12, 2024, Good Times is the most recent Netflix adult animated series to hit the platform. A modern-day revival of the classic ’70s Black sitcom of the same name, The contemporary rehash follows the Evans family as they deal with everyday issues at home and work. Family Guy‘s Seth McFarlane and All in the Family’s Norman Lear. Jay Pharoah stars alongside J.B. Smoove, Masai Martin, Godfrey, Cree Summer, Lil Rel Howrey, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Affion Crocket.

Despite the inspired idea to continue a landmark sitcom 50 years after the original through an animated revival, Good Times has not fared very well among viewers. The show boasts a paltry 3.5 IMDb rating, with many users dismissing the stereotypical tropes that have little place in 2024. As such, it would be a surprise if Netflix decided to renew the show beyond Season 1. As it stands, Good Times is the newest adult animated series to hit Netflix in 2024.

2 Love, Death & Robots (2019-Present)

Returns in 2024

Created by Tim Miller, Love, Death & Robots is a short-form adult-animated anthology series that premiered on Netflix in 2019. With 36 episodes and counting, the ambitious series melds horror, science fiction, and fantasy with futuristic robotic technology to create a beautifully haunting result. What’s great about the show is there is no connective throughline in each short film, meaning viewers can watch any random episode without requiring a pretext.

Winner of 13 Primetime Emmys, Love, Death & Robots is expected to return to Netflix for Season 4 sometime in 2024. All three previous seasons were released between March and May, indicating that springtime might be the annual release window for Season 4. Given Netflix’s lack of marketing compared to traditional TV networks and movie studios, it wouldn’t be shocking for Love, Death & Robots to bombard the platform later in 2024 without much notice.

1 Mulligan (2023-Present)

Returns in May 2024

The cast of Mulligan poses on a lawn

Created by Sam Means and Robert Carlock, Mulligan is a Netflix original adult-animated series that debuted in 2023. The post-apocalyptic cartoon follows Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon), a blue-collar American worker who becomes the unwitting leader of the human race after confronting an alien invasion. The show boasts a stellar cast of performers, including Tina Fey, Dana Carvey, Chrissy Teigen, Phil LaMarr, Danielle Radcliffe, and more.

The first 10 episodes of Mulligan were released on Netflix on May 12, 2023. According to Whenetflix, Season 2 of Mulligan is expected to return in May 2024. Given what transpired in the Season 1 finale, Season 2 will almost certainly address the public election that devolved into a chaotic reality TV show. Moreover, with an upcoming American election in November 2024, the writers may deliberately continue to satirize the need for more government transparency.
