Wish is an animated musical filled with delightful new songs and plenty of callbacks to other classic Disney films from the past 100 years. The story takes place in the Kingdom of Rosas where a young girl named Asha (Ariana DeBose) lives with her grandfather, Sabino (Victor Garber), and her mother, Sakina (Natasha Rothwell). Their kingdom is ruled by a seemingly benevolent king named Magnifico (Chris Pine), who possesses the power to grant the deepest wishes of his subjects. However, while interviewing to become the king’s apprentice, Asha discovers Magnifico has no intention of granting the majority of people’s wishes and is actually harnessing their power for his own personal gain.

Devastated by the revelation, Asha retreats to the forest, along with her pet goat, Valentino (Alan Tudyk), and wishes on a star just as she and her father used to do before he passed away. However, to her surprise, the star descends from the sky spreading stardust in its wake. The forest then comes to life as all the plants and animals, including Valentino, begin to talk. Along with Star, Valentino, and the rest of her friends, Asha subsequently sets out on a journey to return the wishes of Rosas to the people and free them of the king’s malicious intentions. Steeped in all things Disney, given it was made to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary, Wish is a family-friendly film anyone is sure to enjoy. Wish is streaming on Disney+ on Apr. 3, 2024.

Tigers on the Rise

Along with Tiger, Disneynature will mark Earth Day and the 15th anniversary of its first release, Earth, with another feature entitled Tigers on the Rise, which acts as a companion piece to Tiger. Narrated by Blair Underwood, the documentary film celebrates the amazing rebound of one of the world’s most iconic creatures, the tigers of Asia. With the big cat’s numbers now on the rise, the film aims to commend those responsible for such a wondrous shift. Thanks to the dedication of the vets, scientists, and community patrols who continue to work diligently to ensure humans and tigers can coexist, tiger populations are growing.

However, despite such positive changes, the magnificent creatures continue to sit on the endangered species list. Nonetheless, the upward population trend suggests hope for the future of tigers across the globe. Given the nature of such success, tigers are now venturing beyond the confines of India’s forest reserves and into farms and villages across the country. As such, new challenges for the big cats, and the humans who live alongside them, mean more solutions are needed to protect such revered creatures. Directed by Rob Sullivan, co-directed by Alistair Tones, and produced by Sullivan, Vanessa Berlowitz, Mark Linfield, and Roy Conli, Tigers on the Rise is undoubtedly the kind of inspiring and uplifting story both children and adults can enjoy.
