The malicious alien race known as “The Greys” causes chaos for the Barrett family in the cliffhanger in the Dark Skies ending. The Blumhouse movie is a callback to the alien invasion sub-genre. The film follows Lacy and Daniel Barrett, who live an unassuming life with their sons, Jesse and Sammy, in the suburbs. Strange events begin to plague the Barrett family, and they eventually realize something sinister and otherworldly is to blame. Lacy and Daniel go to extreme measures to protect their sons and stop the aliens that are terrorizing their family.

The Dark Skies ending shows the Barretts are ultimately unsuccessful in their attempts to save their family from the alien invaders, as the Greys abduct one of their sons. For most of the movie, the Greys are simply a theory. Once Lacy (Keri Russell) becomes unbearably scared and perplexed by the strange happenings in their home, her research leads her to believe that an alien invasion is responsible for what they’re experiencing. She and Daniel (Josh Hamilton) track down expert Edwin Pollard (J.K. Simmons), who confirms her fears. He informs them that the Greys are a race of tall, sinister creatures hellbent on abducting children. They torment their victims by invading their bodies before making their final move.

Pollard has proof of the Greys’ existence, but he remains unclear as to why they insist on abducting children. That lack of motive on the Greys’ part adds a truly frightening factor to Dark Skies. There’s nothing scarier than a villain without a motive, which makes them genuinely unpredictable. The fact the Greys are supernatural beings capable of controlling human bodies makes them one of the scarier antagonists in recent Blumhouse movies.

What Happened To Jesse In Dark Skies’ Ending?

The Aliens Were Never After Sammy At All

As Sammy is the first person in the family to experience strange occurrences, Lacy and Daniel believe he is the child the Greys are targeting, but they are mistaken. The Dark Skies ending sees Lacy and Daniel preparing for their final stand against the Greys, giving it everything they have to protect their youngest son. The aliens end up invading their home, luring Jesse away from his parents’ protection and abducting him before their eyes. It’s a twist set up from an earlier moment.

Lacy casually tells her clients that her oldest son was constantly sick when he was younger, and Pollard later tells Lacy and Daniel that strange and unexplained illnesses or allergies are a sign the Greys have their hold on a child. They were so convinced it was Sam that they missed the clue.

The
Dark Skies
title card is an Arthur C. Clarke quote: “Two possibilities exist… Either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”

After Jesse’s abduction, Dark Skies jumps ahead three months in time. Everyone blames The Barretts for Jesse’s disappearance, so they pack up and start over in a new home. Lacy mournfully pours over Jesse’s childhood drawings, noticing that Jesse had been drawing the Greys years ago. Just as she makes that connection, static comes on Sam’s walkie-talkie, and Jesse’s panicked voice calls to his brother.

The film abruptly ends after Jesse makes contact, but it is no accident he reaches his family. Dark Skies demonstrates the Greys enjoy tormenting their victims; they freely invade the Barretts’ bodies and leave enough marks on the boys to cause concern to neighbors that Daniel and Lacy were harming their sons. Dangling an out-of-sight Jesse in front of the Barretts with no hope of retrieving him is normal for the Greys, which is why they made such effective villains in Dark Skies.

Alien movies have become a staple of the horror genre, and for good reason, as they rank as some of the scariest films ever made.

The Real Meaning Of The Dark Skies Ending

The Aliens’ True Motivations Were Malicious

What makes the Dark Skies movie so terrifying is that the aliens want to do two things. They want to abduct children, and they just want to mess around and terrorize the surviving family members. Unlike many alien invasion movies, the aliens here are pure evil and want nothing more than to hurt the Barrett family and cause them as much torment as possible. The very end of the movie, when they are messing with Lacy even after abducting her son, shows that they are pure evil.

The Dark Skies ending also cast a harsh light on the people around the Barrett family. The aliens begin by harming the boys, which makes everyone believe that Lacy and Daniel are abusing their children. When the aliens finally abduct Jesse, enough happens to make everyone believe these parents, who want nothing more than to protect their boys, are murderers. In a world where child abuse exists in many forms, the aliens’ use of this tactic further ruins this family’s lives. The Dark Skies ending is grim, terrifying, and ultimately cruel.
