The Fall Guy kicks off the summer movie season. Based on the 1980 television series of the same name, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stunt performer who finds himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film’s lead actor, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor Johnson). Meanwhile, the movie in production is the directorial debut of Colt’s ex-girlfriend, Jody (Emily Blunt), whom he ghosted after he suffered an on-set accident. Colt needs to get to the bottom of the conspiracy while also repairing his relationship with Jody and making sure that her movie goes off without a hitch.

The Fall Guy Ending, Explained

The major conspiracy of the film involves the revelation that the movie star Tom Ryder accidentally killed his newest stunt double, who replaced Colt following his accident. Under the advice of his producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham), he lays low while she brings Colt out of retirement under the guise that Jody asked him to work on the film. This is all a setup as not only does Jody not know Colt will be on the set, but it is all an attempt to get Colt’s face scanned for the set so they can deep fake his image onto a video of Tom accidentally killing his stunt man. Since Colt made a living out of convincingly appearing on camera as Tom in wide shots, they are able to frame him using hotel video of Colt walking into a room that has the dead body that was planted there.

When Tom Ryder tries to kill Colt to clear up any loose ends, Colt manages to escape and fake his own death. He then teams up with Jody, his stunt coordinator, and friend Dan Tucker (Winston Duke) to force Tom Ryder’s confession while on set since he has a tendency to forget when he has a microphone on. They trick Tom into getting in a set car, thinking everything will be blue-screened before Colt hops in and takes him for a ride on a dangerous stunt. While Tom does confess, Gail is able to get the audio from the sound guy and tries to flee in the helicopter with Tom away. Colt is able to catch up with the helicopter and fights them for the audio. He jumps out of the helicopter and safely lands on an inflatable pad that the set team in the movie got rigged up for him in the nick of time.

The movie then ends with a screening of Jody’s movie Metal Storm, with star Jason Momoa (as himself) now in the Tom Ryder role. Footage premieres at Comic-Con in Hall H, accompanied by thunderous applause and narration by Colt which reveals that the movie was a big hit and that he and Jody have begun a relationship. That screen cuts to black and the credits roll, but the movie is not done.

The Fall Guy Has a Mid-Credit Scene and a Montage

The Fall Guy features a mid-credits scene, but the film decides to use the credits while the audience waits to give the audience a little something extra. The camera then cuts to reveal the security officer is, in fact, Lee Majors, who played Colt Stevens in the original Fall Guy series and sang the theme song “Unknown Stuntman.” He is not alone, though, as he is joined by Heather Thomas, who played Jody in the original Fall Guy series.

Tom Ryder attempts to escape and call for help, but he goes into a part of the set with a pyrotechnics warning and blows up, supposedly killing him. It then cuts to his assistant, Alma Milan (Stephanie Hsu), getting on the phone to call Jason Momoa’s agent, not only explaining the final gag of the movie but paying off a subplot from her earlier in the film where, in exchange for helping Colt, she asks for a producer credit on Metal Storm, which is shown in the Comic-Con footage at the end of the movie.

As the kick-off to the summer movie season, there is a chance Universal Pictures wants The Fall Guy to be their next big action franchise that could serve as a potential replacement for The Fast & The Furious, which appears to be coming to a close.
