A very high-profile package is making the rounds and it involves Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde adapting a ’90s comic book character created by the brainchild behind Deadpool. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Wilde is attached to direct an adaptation of the ’90s comic book, Avengelyne, a character created by Rob Liefeld, best known for bringing Deadpool to life.

Robbie’s production banner LuckyChap, which also includes Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, will produce the project alongside Simon Kinberg, who has written his fair share of X-Men movies as well as the Deadpool films. The hope is to have the package shopped to various studios and streamers in the coming weeks.

Created by Liefeld and Cathy Christian, Avengelyne debuted in 1995 and followed an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with monsters and demons. She is a fallen angel cast to Earth who is entrusted to find and protect The One, a key figure needed to protect humanity from the forces of evil. The character was inspired by Ben Dunn’s comic Warrior Nun Areala, even being featured in two crossover series in 1996. In 2011, a new ongoing Avengelyne series debuted at Image Comics and was supervised by Mark Poulton and Owen Gieni.

After more than three decades, Rob Liefeld will write one more Deadpool story before walking away from the character.

An Earlier Avengelyne Adaptation Almost Starred Gina Carano

This isn’t the first time that Avengelyne has been attempted on the big screen. In 2013, Liefeld and Gina Carano were working on a treatment that would’ve had her star as the titular character. Once that fell apart, Paramount Pictures purchased the film rights in 2016 with hopes that Akiva Goldsman would produce. It would appear that those rights have now lapsed, which is why LuckyChap and the new team can put together a package for another shot at giving Avengelyne the live-action treatment.

At this point, Robbie is only on board as a producer and has no intention of starring in the film. Her LuckyChap banner is coming off the massive success of Barbie, which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. LuckyChap also recently announced that they will be producing a Sims film with Kate Herron as director and co-writer alongside Briony Redman.

Wilde was primarily known as an actress before she made her directorial debut with 2019’s Booksmart, which garnered widespread critical acclaim and solid box office, grossing $25 million on a modest $6 million budget. She followed that up with the 2022 thriller Don’t Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine. The movie became more known for its behind-the-scenes drama rather than the film itself, and it received mixed reviews from critics, although it was financially successful, grossing $87.6 million worldwide on a reported $35 million budget.
