“It’s never too late to figure it out.” 30-something Lucy (Dakota Johnson) discovers that she’s not attracted to the opposite sex later in life during the course of directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne’s new dramedy, Am I OK? (2022). And it’s up to her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) to help Lucy navigate coming out of the closet. Written by Lauren Pomerantz, Am I OK? dropped on Max yesterday (June 6), and fans are reacting to the film largely the same way as the critics whose reviews appear on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of this writing, Am I Ok? registers 82% on the Tomatometer and holds an identical audience score of 82%. While those scores don’t necessarily mean everyone is going to enjoy watching the movie, most people are responding favorably on social media. A number of YouTubers took to the trailer’s comments section after Am I OK? debuted on Max and revealed how much they enjoyed Johnson’s latest project. @nannickle said:

I just watched this. I loved it. It’s a story about best friends and Lucky (Dakota Johnson) trying to figure out her life. She is wonderful in her part, as is her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mixuno). I loved the ending.

@deputyseal409 had one of the most honest reactions to Am I OK? during the dramedy’s first 24 hours streaming on Max. The YouTuber wrote:

I have anxiety and no social life. I didn’t know I was pan until I turned 30, and I’ve been afraid of dating ever since my high school crush didn’t work out. I totally relate to this. Plus, life is too short for boring ice cream. You’ve got to try every flavor.

Am I OK? Resonates with Fans on Max

Dakota Johnson’s latest film Am I OK? is already far outperforming the Madame Web box office train wreck that debuted earlier this year in theaters, which featured the actress in the titular role. Plus, the fan response to Am I OK? has also proven to be considerably better, even though the dramedy just dropped on Max for the first time. And one of the reasons this Johnson-led film is getting a better response than Madame Web: It’s resonating with audiences in a very meaningful way. @Nathliaa11 wrote:

I don’t know if there’s a movie that more relates to my life than this one.

@prinoone9632 says:

There’s something about Dakota’s energy that I haven’t seen in anyone else.

Dakota Johnson Is Pessimistic About the Film Industry but One Thing Gives Her Hope

Dakota Johnson recently described the filmmaking industry as “bleak,” but there’s still hope as far as the actress is concerned.

@tankgirl9324 writes:

I’m starting my free trial of Max for this one.

For those who aren’t familiar with the 2022 film, check out the synopsis for Am I OK? below:

“Lucy and Jane are the best of friends.
They finish each other’s sentences, predict every detail of each other’s food order,
and pretty much know everything about each other.
But when Jane is promoted at work and agrees to move to London for her new position,
Lucy confesses her deepest, long-held secret: She likes women, she has for a long time, and she’s terrified by this later-in-life realization.
Suddenly, their friendship is thrown into chaos as
the two choose different routes by which to navigate the unexpected changes in their lives.”

Now, whether Am I OK? turns out to eventually be ranked among Dakota Johnson’s best performances remains to be seen, but the fan response so far has been quite good. Am I OK? is available to stream on Max and the Australian streaming subscription service, Binge.

Check out a statement from directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne below:

When we read the script for Am I Ok? we immediately felt aligned on a personal level with the themes of love, women, friendship, and sexuality.
As directors, we were interested in going toward moments,
the space between the notes, the nuances and the complexities of self-discovery
and personal awakening.
We hope audiences will also relate, feel seen, and be able to laugh at the ongoing, ever-evolving internal struggle of the human spirit to know oneself.
