Chris Pine Gives Promising Update on Dungeons & Dragons 2

Chris Pine still believes a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could happen in the future. Based on the iconic Role Playing Game of the same name, the Dungeons & Dragons movie followed four unlikely adventurers as they plan a heist to retrieve an ancient relic, unleashing the wrath of an ancient cult on their city. The film was a hit with fans of the game, but failed to make a significant mark at the box office, leaving many fans believing a sequel would never be made. So far, a second film hasn’t been officially announced by Paramount.

But Chris Pine (who plays Edgin Darvis, a thief who leads the group) still has hope, and recently told an audience at ACE Superhero Comic Con (via PopVerse) that a sequel is still a possibility. When asked if a sequel could be happening, Pine’s response was surprisingly optimistic. Not only does the actor want it to happen, he is pretty sure it will. Despite the film’s mediocre box office, Chris Pine believes that Hasbro (who own the rights to the IP) still believes in the franchise’s potential. Pine said:

“Yeah, absolutely. Again, this is inside baseball. The film did fine, but it didn’t do fine enough. That was the breaks in our business. For these films to do well, you have to make a billion, which is a lot. I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one, because I think Hasbro owns the rights to it. I think there’s a good chance, and if they could figure out a financial way to make it work, I think they’ll do it.”

Despite being based on an incredibly popular IP (which has seen a massive boost in popularity in recent years), and a star-studded cast (which includes Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophie Lillis, Bradley Cooper, and Hugh Grant), Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves failed to win big at the box office. The film grossed around $208 million internationally, against a budget of around $150 million.

Dungeons & Dragons 2 Needs a Smaller Budget

As previously mentioned, no one at Paramount or Hasbro have officially announced Dungeons & Dragons 2 to be in development. However, that doesn’t mean either company is ruling out the idea completely. Speaking to Variety in July 2023, Paramount CEO Brian Robbins said that Dungeons & Dragons 2 is a possibility, but the filmmakers need to solve one glaring problem… the budget. Robbins simply said:

While Dungeons & Dragons 2 could still happen, another D&D related project has officially been axed. A live-action Dungeons & Dragons series for Paramount+ has officially been canceled. The 8 episode series was ordered before Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hit theaters. The series was expected to tie-in with the movie. Paramount+ have canceled their 8 episode order of the show. However, this doesn’t mean the project is entirely dead. The series is currently undergoing a creative overhaul, before it will be put back on the market for prospective networks/streamers.
