Chris Hemsworth is about to take on a much less heroic role than that of his MCU character Thor when he appears as Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Rather than taking on the bad guys and fighting to save the world, Hemsworth’s part in the latest Mad Max movie is one that required him to not only dig deep into the character’s way of thinking, but also a hefty amount of time in the make-up chair – something that caused him no end of irritation.

In a recent interview with Variety, Hemsworth detailed the extensive and challenging process he underwent to transform into the menacing Dementus, a transformation that included a prosthetic nose and a daily four-hour makeup routine. This is something that the actor was not exactly thrilled about, but it strangely helped him get riled up for his performance in front of the cameras. He explained:

I spent about four hours in the makeup chair. [I] was justifiably irritated by the end of it. That really helped my performance-there was a nice amount of pent-up rage simmering under the surface.

Playing the villain was something that Hemsworth relished, and it gave him a completely different challenge to that of playing Marvels’ God of Thunder. He added:

“It’s not intentional to be a comparison of Thor, but I found a wonderful departure to it — to play the villain, transform, and inhabit a completely different physicality was a lot of fun. I loved it. And it was the real attraction.”

Furiosa Can Continue George Miller’s Fury Road Success

The Mad Max franchise began relatively quietly back in 1979, as an Australian movie starring a then relatively unknown Mel Gibson as a police officer turned vigilante living in a dystopian future, who extracts revenge on a biker gang that killed his family. While the franchise seemed to come to an end with Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, Miller attempted to continue the story in 2003, with Gibson expected to reprise his lead role, but that production failed and Miller would take another decade to bring Max back in Fury Road, this time with Tom Hardy playing the character.

The production of the script for Fury Road provided Miller with enough material for two stories, and this led to the conception of Furiosa, a prequel centering around the titular character, played in Fury Road by Charlize Theron. Although the original intention was to have Theron reprise her role through de-aging technology, Miller decided that it would not be convincing enough, hence the subsequent casting of Anya Taylor-Joy in the film.

Mad Max Creator Planning Future Sequel, Teases Crowd-Pleasing Cameo in Furiosa

Director George Miller confirms major cameo in Furiosa and reveals plans for another Mad Max movie.

Initial Furiosa reviews suggest that Miller’s Mad Max world has plenty of road still to run, which is good news for fans of the franchise, and for Hardy, who reportedly signed up for three movies back in 2015. The working title of the next movie is Mad Max: The Wasteland, but there has been little movement on that project in the last five years. Based on the fact that Miller is never one to be rushed in his creations, it would not be untrue to say that the future sequel seems to be moving along at his regular pace.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
