Brando also became known for his behavior outside the screen, and for his troubled private life. Despite this, Brando continued to be held in high regard by the industry, with the actor now considered a trailblazer for his activism. The actor once famously refused to attend the 45th Academy Awards, instead sending actress and activist for Native American civil rights, Sacheen Littlefeather (Maria Louise Cruz) to decline the Best Actor Oscar, which he won for his performance in The Godfather.

Zane has praised Brando (via Deadline) for his activism, commending the Hollywood icon for “foresight” when it came to such issues as civil rights, Indigenous rights, and the climate crisis.

“Back then no one would touch causes. He championed civil rights, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. He walked the walk for civil rights; he did it for Indigenous rights. What no one knows about is what he did for the environment as an activist and the foresight he had on what in fact would [become] a climate crisis.”
