In Somebody Feed Phil season 3, episode 3, Phil Rosenthal sampled some of the best foods London had to offer. Phil visited a variety of restaurants during episode 3. The former Everybody Loves Raymond writer took dining to the next level as he sampled everything London had to offer, from fish and chips to bubble and squeak, afternoon tea, and turbot. Phil’s London episode featured many familiar faces in the UK food scene, including Jay Rayner, Nigella Lawson, and Tomos Parry. Episode 3 kicked off with Phil at Fortnum & Mason eating “his favorite store-bought cookies:” dark chocolate coated pearl biscuits.

The TV writer revealed a love for London which developed after watching Mary Poppins as a kid. He said:

I don’t know what it was about this movie. But at four years old I knew who I was going to marry. I was going to marry Julie Andrews.


Phil described his impression of London as the comfort of childhood. He noted that this is because many fairy tales and children’s stories take place in London. Besides observing the feel of the place, from the old buildings to its history, Phil seemed to love tasting the food in England’s capital. He said he never wanted to go to London because he’d heard the food was “lousy,” but thanks to the Netflix show, his mind may have been changed.

Ken’s Fish Bar

Phil’s Somebody Feed Phil London food journey in season 3 (via Netflix) started in Ken’s Fish Bar. English journalist and food critic Jay Rayner took Phil to grab some fish and chips – a British delicacy. The pair visited Ken’s Fish Bar, a family-owned establishment that is as authentic as it gets. Phil was excited to share that the “french fry” was one of his favorite foods. This slip-up was met with pointed looks from both Jay and the staff as they reminded him that as long as he was in London, he’d call the food “chips.”

There’s no better way to kick off the culinary experience than to chow down on some battered cod and chips, doused in vinegar and sprinkled with salt. As they ate, Rayner reminded Phil that although his journey would take him to great, exotic places, he bet that the thing he’d want most again was fish and chips from Ken’s Fish Bar.


Yotam Ottolenghi’s Rovi

Phil and his friend, Dan Patterson, headed to Yotam Ottolenghi’s Rovi next. The vegetable-focused London restaurant provided Phil with a taste of Israeli cuisine. Together, he and Dan tried cooled lemon yogurt with hot tomatoes, leek, grilled onions, and green gazpacho, as well as shakshuka.

As they ate, Yotam discussed how he believed the British food scene got a bad rap due to the effects of the Second World War. Yotam said that at the time, many people could not afford to eat good, flavorful food, and the memory of that time has stuck with the country. The focus of the Michelin-starred Rovi is to highlight the vegetables in their dishes. One of the ways they do this is with a shawarma sandwich made of celery root rather than meat that, according to Phil, “could put Burger King out of business.”

From fine dining to eating on the go, Phil met Stephen and David of The Happy Pear, a plant-based cooking and lifestyle company, in Somebody Feed Phil season 3, episode 3. The trio jogged, ran, and did push-ups around Hampstead Heath, as well as trying out some foods. Artichoke was their first stop, a family-run greengrocer. Phil described it as a “jewel box of a fruit store.”

Artichoke stocks fruit and vegetables from all over the world, including mangoes from Pakistan and figs from Lebanon.


Les Filles

Les Filles was Phil’s next stop: a bakery and coffee shop. Phil, Stephen, and David were met with a delicious-looking breakfast spread. Les Filles offers Moroccan cuisine, and Phil had the pleasure of trying out rose tea porridge, beetroot hummus with pomegranate, and chia pudding with chocolate ganache. Les Filles Kitchen is owned by sisters Sonia and Hayet Zaame and can be found on Heath Street. After devouring the delicious spread, the trio continued their run through the Village with Phil remarking that he should have asked the sisters to carry him for the rest of the workout.

Les Filles is open seven days a week from 7 am to 5 pm.


Ginger and White

Hampstead, London

For anyone looking for some of the best espresso in London, Happy Pear duo David and Stephen recommend heading to Ginger & White. And, if the reaction by Somebody Feed Phil crew is anything to go by, the carrot cake looks pretty good, too. After a final round of push-ups in the courtyard, the group spent their final moments together laughing over the artisan espresso. Located on Perrin’s Court, Ginger & White also offers breakfast, sandwiches, and salads.

Maria’s Market Cafe

Leaving Hampstead Village behind, Phil then visited Borough Market, his “favorite place in all of London.” Phil met his wife, Monica, and their friends, Tom and Cathy McGowan, to try out the market food. Phil told the audience that there has been a market in that spot going back 1,000 years and, in the 1700s, the market became a permanent fixture in London.

Tom brought Phil to Maria’s Market Cafe, a spot that he went to weekly when he was in the play, Wicked. There, they enjoyed bubble and squeak breakfast baps. Phil explained that “bubble and squeak” is the affectionate term for the mashed potatoes and cabbage on breakfast sandwiches. Monica enjoyed hers topped with sausage and Maria’s “brown sauce.”

Kappacasein Dairy

Staying in The Borough Market, Phil and the group headed to Kappacasein Dairy. At Kappacasein, Phil and the group indulged in the world’s best “toastie,” British slang for a grilled cheese sandwich. Phil explained that Kappacasein’s owner, Bill Oglethorpe, worked for years at Neal’s Yard Dairy, a cheese store also located in Borough Market. Oglethorpe sampled every combination of cheese as he worked to make the perfect grilled cheese. Phil, Monica, Tom, and Cathy passed around the toastie, all agreeing that it was so good they would marry Bill if they could.

The Netflix show then took Phil to Rochelle Canteen in Playground Gardens. There he met actress Lady Frederick Windsor, aka Sophie Winkleman. Rochelle Canteen is located in an 1800s school bikeshed in Shoreditch. The restaurant is run by Margo Henderson, wife of chef Fergus Henderson. Phil declared that the British people had perfected toast. Sophie agreed, saying there was something religious about watching it be prepared. Phil and Sophie enjoyed some British delights at Rochelle Canteen, including scrambled eggs on toast, chicken and leek pie, and a pork and fennel dish.

As well as great food, it turns out that London also has a lot to offer when it comes to drinks. Anyone looking to try out one of the world’s best martinis should get themselves down to Dukes, London, according to Somebody Feed Phil. The martinis were so good that Phil invited members of the crew to have a taste of his, excited to see that all of their reactions were on par with his enjoyment of the drink.

The bar can be found at 35 St James’s Place. Phil, Monica, and the Great British Bake Off’s Liam Charles tasted the cocktails. Judging by their reactions, Duke’s is certainly worth a visit.

BRAT Restaurant

Savory donuts with anchovy and whole wild turbot were next on the menu for Phil. He and Nigella Lawson dined at seafood-focused restaurant BRAT, which chef Tomos Parry runs. Over the turbot, Phil explained that the fish is slow-roasted over an open flame which causes the turbot’s fat and cartilage to break down and coat the fish in a buttery-like sauce. BRAT takes its inspiration from “Basque restaurants like the ones in San Sebastián,” according to The Staff Canteen. The restaurant is Michelin-starred and offers oysters, cod’s roe, lemon sole, and much more.

Aynhoe Park

Entrepreneur James Perkins and his wife, Sophie Taylor, welcomed Phil into their home – Aynhoe Park. After arriving at the eclectic estate, Phil enjoyed dishes cooked by Australian chef Brett Graham. Graham owns the only pub in London with a Michelin star, as well as the fine dining restaurant, The Ledbury in Notting Hill. The Ledbury has an additional two Michelin stars.

Aynhoe Park is available to hire for weddings, parties, and corporate retreats.

For starters, they had huge 14-year-old oysters. The enormous seafood dish was followed by a rack of fellow deer. Perkins described tasting the oyster as “eating a piece of history.” To show his appreciation for James and Sophie’s hospitality, Phil finished off the dining experience by volunteering to feed some of the 240 deer that live on the estate.


Dishoom

Rounding off Phil’s trip, he sought to finish things on a high. By this point, viewers may have been concerned that Phil was set to pop given the amount of food he had consumed. He joked during the final dinner that the theme of the Somebody Feed Phil episode was “gluttony.Phil was joined by everyone who had been on the episode, and together they dined at modern Indian restaurant Dishoom.

Dishoom has seven London restaurants: Kensington, Shoreditch, King’s Cross, Carnaby, Covent Garden, Battersea, and Canary Wharf.


Phil and co. tasted a breakfast naan roll filled with double bacon and egg, lamb chops, chili chicken, okra fries, and much more. One element of the eatery that Phil particularly liked was the fact that for every meal Dishoom sells, they give a meal to underprivileged kids in both India and the UK. The Somebody Feed Phil host called the meal and the company heaven.
