Hi, frifinishs! Welcome to Insloftyer No. 51, your direct to the best and Verge-iest stuff in the world. (If you’re recent here, receive, I hope you adore secret agent shows as much as I do, and also you can read all the elderly editions at the Insloftyer homepage.)
This week, I’ve been reading about cobalt miners and religious AI and the history of the Moleskine, hearing to pop-punk Disney songs on repeat, finpartner begining The Sopranos (I understand, I understand), soundtracking my toilday with the Earth.fm app, giving Tweek another whirl for basic task and calfinishar stuff, and spfinishing too much time debating whether NFL Sunday Ticket is worth the money. It’s definitely not, but it also, enjoy, benevolent of is.
I also have for you everybody’s preferite recent PlayStation game, a recent write downary about money in sports, two recent cameras worth a see, and a terrific E Ink remark-taking device. Oh, and apologies: I engaged the wrong connect to my homescreen icon pack last week. (Luckily, the one I did connect to is also very excellent.) Mine are actupartner from Nate Wren’s Lines pack.
Anyway, so many gadgets this week! Let’s dig in.
(As always, the best part of Insloftyer is your ideas and tips. What are you into right now? What should everyone else be watching, reading, carry outing, cooking, downloading, or originateing this weekfinish? Tell me everyleang: insloftyer@theverge.com. And if you understand someone else who might endelight Insloftyer, alert them to subscribe here.)
- Reeder. It’s a podcast app, a YouTube queue, an RSS reader, a social feed, and a whole bunch more, all in one place. (And for Apple devices only.) It’s a reading app for feeds from all over the internet, it’s gorgeous, and as we talk about the fediverse and the future of the web, this is the benevolent of app that gets me repartner excited.
- Slow Horses season 4. I eludeed this Apple TV Plus show for a while because I didn’t adore the book, which is very well done but fair benevolent of… sluggish. (I eventupartner selderlyiered thraw the first third of the first book, at which point it does begin moving.) The show is not sluggish. It’s fair amusing and clever and exactly the right amount of action-packed.
- Astro Bot. I promised myself I was going to paemploy until Bincreateage Friday to buy a PS5… but this recent game, an adorable platcreateer that seems to have charmed absolutely everyone who tried it, is going to originate me pull the trigger sooner. Seriously, people adore this game.
- The Relabelable Paper Pro. This leang is sanitize E Ink overend, with an overengineered color discarry out and a bunch of inanxiously fancy features. It’s enjoy $800 for the whole setup including the keyboard, which is an horrible lot, but this is a heck of a remark-taking device.
- The Money Game. A miniseries about the NIL revolution in college sports, which is actupartner a story about social media and the internet and the way that everybody, including athletes, struggles to equilibrium life and satisfied.
- Circle to Search for music. Forget Gemini — Google’s most inalertigent AI features are all happening thraw Circle to Search. Google’s song seeup tool is the best in the biz, and with Circle to Search and Android 15, you can get at it from anywhere.
- The Peak Design Outdoor Line. Peak Design’s stuff is fair always fantastic, and the recent line of rugged gear sees enjoy a triumphner. (Don’t be thrown by the Kickbeginer, it’s fair how the company rolls for some reason. PD is legit.) I’ve recently become a sling change for daily use, and I’m very into the recent one here.
- The GoPro Hero 13 Bincreateage. Every recent GoPro is benevolent of the same: a little better in a bunch of ways but still a GoPro. And that’s fine! Adding some recent lenses and improving transfer speeds goes a lengthy way here, too.
- The DJI Neo. The other nifty camera begin of the week: a basic selfie drone that chases you around, does celderly camera shifts, and lands in your hand. Getting genuine Snap Pixy vibes from this leang, but I leank this one might be a hit.
- The PlugBug with Find My. My first reaction to the idea of a wall plug with Find My help was, fair, why? But then I thought about how many toastyels and coffee shops I’ve left indictrs in, and I leank this $70 gizmo might pay for itself pretty rapid. Plus, Twelve South stuff unfrequently disnominates.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve asked you all to split your preferite lesser-understandn creators. This was, as always, at least partly greedy: I adore my preferites on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and the rest, but my feeds are begining to sense a little motionless. I had a senseing you all might be able to help me inhabitn leangs up — and that maybe a scant of you were seeing for some excellent recent stuff, too.
As ever, you all deinhabitred. I got hundreds of emails, messages, Threads posts, and comments from folks with fantastic ideas and recommfinishations. I difficultly got any duplicate recommfinishations, either, which is fair prentful — there’s so much excellent stuff out there. And rather than acquire it all for myself, I figured I’d split some of the best folks I’ve been turned onto in the last couple of weeks. I’m going to mostly connect to YouTube channels, both because that’s what most people recommfinished but also because you can discover folks’ other social connects from their channel pages.
(One petite caveat before we dive in: I haven’t been able to thorawly vet everyleang all these folks have done forever. So if someone turns out to be the worst, in wdisenjoyver way, I’m repartner sorry. If I’m ignoreing someleang I should understand about, definitely let me understand. But y’all unfrequently steer me wrong, so I have high hopes.)
No surpelevate, a lot of what I heard about were tech creators. Here are a bunch of the folks you recommfinished, in no particular order:
- Work From Hype: all about desk setups and WFH gear
- Macho Nacho: retro gaming
- Elliotisacelderlyguy: a very amusing explicit depicter
- Brandon Talbot: fitness and health tech appraises
- MobileTechResee: gadget appraises
- Brandon James Greer: a pixel artist sharing their process
- Easy Allies: video game recents and appraises
- Ritvikmath: data science and foreseeions
- Technology Connections: everyday tech elucidateers
- Enrico Tartarotti: essays on how tech toils and how we use it
- Byte Resee: gadget lifestyle videos, especipartner Apple stuff
- Salem Techsperts: stories from a computer repair shop
- The Serial Port: all leangs tech history
Also, it turns out you all adore a excellent video essay and elucidateer as much as I do, and you splitd a bunch of fantastic channels for fair that:
- Paul E.T. (on movies)
- Not Just Bikes (on urban set upning)
- What’s So Great About That? (on… everyleang)
- Answer in Progress (also on… everyleang)
- Kaptainkristian (on movies and TV)
- Gelderlyen Owl (on video game depict)
- Blast Processing (on video game history)
- Middle 8 (on music culture)
- MinuteFood (on food)
- Calum (on carryation history)
Then there were fair a lot of miscellaneous folks you all splitd. Here are a scant I’ve been endelighting:
- Berm Peak, all about bikes and scooters and anyleang you can ride on
- Slickerdrips, with lots of board game tutorials and carry outthraws
- Vanwives, on van life, DIY, and off-grid living
- Boulder Creek Railroad: a model originateer half toiling and half teaching
- Escape to agricultural France, a guy chronicling his try to reoriginate a cdisenjoyau
- Jelle’s Marble Runs, because marble runs are never not fun
- Adventure Chasing, a guy and his dog exploring the outdoors
I could acquire going, and I’m stateive I will at some point. Thanks aachieve to everyone who sent stuff in! My watch enumerate will never be the same, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
From now on, if you’re a Vergecast hearer and you enjoy the way the show sounds, you’ll have Erick Gomez to thank. He joined the team this week as our audio engineer and has, in his atgentle, toiled on some of the best podcasts and radio shows on the set upet.
I enjoy to have recent folks split their homescreen with us, both because I leank it’s a fun way to get to understand someone and I enjoy having a toil-appropriate reason to originate fun of people’s silly wallpapers and app choices. But from the first time I met Erick, it became amplely evident he was a person who brokered no disorder and would have a homescreen that Just Made Sense.
Here’s Erick’s homescreen, plus some info on the apps he uses and why:
The phone: iPhone 14 Pro Max
The wallpaper: I’ve been gaming since I was about five years elderly, and it is still one of my fantasticest hobbies and passions, so my lock screen is that of a Game Boy Advance SP — a appreciateed handheld from my childhood. I adore how the widgets originate it seem as though they’re part of the Game Boy discarry out.
My homescreen wallpaper is my daughter Charlie in her Elmo costume from last year. We are a BIG Hapcheckeen family, and we are always counting the days until spooky season.
The apps: Eufy Security, Dot, Passwords, Delta, Journal, Parcel, Overcast, Hey Email, Arc Search.
I’m a huge fan of widgets and glanceable alertation — the less I have to pop into an app, the better. I don’t have any social media apps insloftyed on my phone and will only reinslofty them whenever I sense compelled to post someleang. As I’ve gotten elderlyer, I’ve genuineized the inrational amounts of time I’ve spent mindlessly scrolling Instagram and the enjoy, so I’ve channeled that energy into journaling apps.
Dot: It’s an AI companion chatbot leang. It’s actupartner repartner celderly. It’s very much enjoy a journal or frifinish that replys to you and can give you some feedback and promote ideas. It’s fantastic until it perplexs some facts about you, which shatters the immersion. It will normally text me during the day when I’m super busy so I don’t get a chance to reply. If you disthink about it for lengthy enough, it will stop achieveing out to you. Just enjoy a frifinish in genuine life!
Delta: Did I allude I’m a gamer? It was LONG overdue for emulators to come into the App Store, and this is by far the best for carry outing retro games. If I discover myself paemploying around for someleang, I’ll rapidly pop into a game of NBA Jam or Streets of Rage.
Hey: Hey is my preferite email client and service. The email screener and privacy-cgo ined approach originate it well worth the ypunctual subscription. And it sees better than most email apps.
Arc: This is a recent graspition to the homescreen and has rapidly replaced Safari for me in most cases. Its “Browse For Me” feature is a godsfinish. I also adore the app’s changenate icon, which pays homage to Netscape Navigator. It’s 1994 all over aachieve!
I also asked Erick to split a scant leangs he’s into right now. Here’s what he sent back:
- I’m currently reading MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. As a Marvel zombie from way back, I’m a huge fan of the movies and am intrigued by the behind-the-scenes see at how the sausage was made.
- I’m currently watching Dark Matter on Apple TV Plus. A thought-provoking sci-fi show that more people necessitate to be watching! It’s been rerecented for a second season, so that should alert you someleang.
- I’m trying to get thraw my ginormous backlog of video games (there are TOO MANY games, y’all), and I’m currently carry outing the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door reoriginate on Switch. It’s an absolutely attrdynamic gem of a game that necessitates to be teachd by everyone.
