The original Good Times was groundbreaking in its portrayal of a Black two-parent family on television. Created by Mike Evans and Eric Montes and executive-produced by Norman Lear, the show depicted the joys and challenges faced by the Evans family living in a Chicago housing project. Now, the animated version aims to continue this legacy while addressing contemporary issues, as per Netflix’s TUDUM.

Ranada Shepard, known for her work on Young Love and Diary of a Future President, has been tapped as the showrunner and executive producer of the reboot. “Once Sony said ‘Good Times,’ ‘Norman Lear,’ I said, ‘Say less. I’m there,'” Shepard remarked, expressing her enthusiasm for the project. The series also boasts an impressive executive production team, including Stephen Curry, Norman Lear, and Seth MacFarlane. Read Shepard’s comment on the show’s content:

“It’s about a Black family that comes together, laughs together, and survives the system on the South Side of Chicago. What you’ll get from that is a lot of social commentary, a lot of pushing the boundaries, a lot of feel-good television, but also a lot of things that may be in the vein of The Simpsons and South Park and Family Guy. When you’re looking back 10 years later, you’ll be like, ‘They said that on Good Times?’ Oh my gosh.’ ”

Good Times Reimagined: The Evans Family Returns in Animated Form

The animated Good Times will follow the fourth generation of the Evans family, still residing in apartment 17C of the same Chicago housing project. The decision to animate the series allows for greater creative flexibility, enabling the show to explore new dimensions and scenarios. Shepard explains that animation offers the opportunity to “play in this world a little bit more,” such as visualizing conversations with God or reimagining the iconic apartment for a new generation.

The voice cast assembled for the reboot is nothing short of stellar. J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) will voice the heads of the household, Reggie and Beverly Evans. Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live, The Blackening) will portray their teenage artist son, Junior, with Marsai Martin as their activist daughter, Grey. Slink Johnson and Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola round out the cast as the drug-dealing infant son, Dalvin, and Beverly’s best friend, Lashes by Lisa, respectively.
