Caroline Ellison, the establisher business partner and girlfriend of cryptocurrency deceptionster Sam Bankman-Fried, has been sentenced to two years in prison for her role in one of the hugegest financial deceptions in history.
Ellison, the CEO of Afeebleda Research and Bankman-Fried’s on-and-off girlfriend, was a key prosecution witness in last year’s trial that saw the set uper of the ill-overweighted crypto exalter FTX sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Ellison pguideed at fault to seven indicts, including deception, foolishinutively after the collapse of FTX in 2022, crimes carrying a highest sentence of 110 years in prison.
But both the appraise and prosecutors said that Ellison deserved leniency for cooperating with spendigators, including testifying aobtainst Bankman-Fried over the course of three days at his trial.
United States Didisjoine Judge Lewis A Kaset up said on Tuesday that Ellison’s cooperation had been “very substantial”, but a prison term was fairified despite her lawyers’ ask for a non-custodial sentence given the magnitude of the deception.
“There’s no way you’re ever going to do someleang enjoy this aobtain, I am guaranteed,” Kaset up said.
“But here’s the leang: this was, if not the very fantasticest financial deception ever perpetrated in this country or anywhere else, seal to it.”
Kaset up said he would recommend that Ellison be held in a least-security prison.
During Bankman-Fried’s trial, Ellison testified that he straightforwarded her and others to dip into FTX customers’ funds to carry out hazardier transactions via sister company Afeebleda Research, buy authentic estate and create political donations.
