28 Years Later Adds Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Other Big Names to Cast

28 Years Later Adds Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Other Big Names to Cast

  • 28 Years Later
” will be led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes.
  • Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunite for the new trilogy, with possible return of original star Cillian Murphy.
  • The plan is to film several sequels back-to-back.

According to sources, the main cast for the upcoming 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later, has been found. And it is stacked. As per a report by Deadline, 28 Years Later will be led by Kraven the Hunter and Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Killing Eve star and Emmy Award winner Jodie Comer, and Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes. Now, while this casting news does come via mysterious, rather than official means, it is unlikely that Deadline would reveal these names unless they were confident in the source. Meaning that 28 Years Later has now amassed a hugely talented trio for director Danny Boyle’s return to the post-apocalyptic world of zombies.

28 Years Later is all set to be helmed by Danny Boyle from a script written by Alex Garland, reuniting the pair after all this time. At present there is no word on whether original star (and now Oscar winner) Cillian Murphy will also return, though he is on board as an executive producer.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is best known for roles in the likes of the comic book movies Kick-Ass, Kick-Ass 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, as well as the action movies Bullet Train, The King’s Man, and The Fall Guy. He has been tipped recently for the coveted role of James Bond, but could his role in 28 Years Later mean that he’s passed on wielding a licence to kill?

Jodie Comer, meanwhile, has proven herself to be a serious talent thanks to performances in the likes of The Last Duel, Help, and Killing Eve, for which she won a British Academy Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. Comer can next be seen starring alongside Tom Hardy and Aaron Butler in the acclaimed drama The Bikeriders.

As for well-renowned thespian Ralph Fiennes, the actor has been a staple of both the big screen, the small screen, and the stage for decades, and will be a welcome addition to the world of rage-fuelled undead.

Your days are numbered…

Released back in 2002, 28 Days Later follows Murphy as a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover that there has been an outbreak of a deadly virus in London, which infects everyone and turns them into mindless killers. 28 Days Later was met with critical acclaim for its reinvention and resurrection of the zombie genre, with a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, being released in 2007.

28 Days Later: Does it Deserve the Crown for Best Zombie Movie?

After all these years, what makes 28 Days Later unforgettable is that it forces us to reflect on who we are running to and what we are running from.

Plot details for 28 Years Later currently remain under wraps, but from the title we can assume that the sequel will pick up quite some time after the zombie-outbreak ravaged the United Kingdom. The long wait for a return to Boyle’s horror franchise will be well worth it, with a new trilogy now in the works. Something that has now been confirmed by writer Alex Garland.

“A whole idea for a trilogy just sort of came – bing! – into my head. It makes me really question what creativity is. I feel like an observer, a lot of the time.”

While 28 Years Later will be directed by Boyle, recent reports have revealed that the next installment is now all set to be helmed by filmmaker Nia DaCosta, who is best known for the likes of The Marvels and the 2021 horror legacy sequel Candyman.

The plan currently in place is to film both
28 Years Later
and its follow-up back-to-back.
