1985 Brat Pack Movie Becomes Streaming Success After Hit Documentary

St. Elmo’s Fire becomes a streaming success after the hit documentary, Brats. Directed by Joel Schumacher, with a script he co-wrote with Carl Kurlander, the 1985 coming-of-age film follows a group of recent graduates from Georgetown University as they adjust to life after college and the challenges of becoming adults. Starring Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy, the St. Elmo’s Fire cast includes several members of the Brat Pack, a nickname given to the young group of actors who often starred together in teen-oriented coming-of-age films from the 1980s.

Now, with the documentary Brats becoming a hit, one of the Brat Pack’s films from 1985 has also become a streaming success. For the week of June 13-19, St. Elmo’s Fire ranked ninth on Reelgood‘s Top 10 movies streaming chart, finishing right behind Dune: Part Two and ahead of American Fiction for the past week. In the same time frame, Brats ranked fifth on Reelgood’s Top 10 overall streaming chart and third on the movies chart. Check out the full charts below:

The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire, both from 1985, defined the members of the Brat Pack. However, while the former was released first and is one of John Hughes’ most acclaimed works, the latter isn’t remembered for being an especially great film. At the time, it received negative reviews from critics because of its often unlikable characters. Still, St. Elmo’s Fire epitomizes the Brat Pack era from the iconic cast, distinctive fashion, and memorable music. Because of its cast, it was a modest box office success, grossing over $37 million on a $10 million budget.

St. Elmo’s Fire is being rewatched 39 years later because of the hit documentary, Brats. Released June 13 on Hulu, the documentary, directed by Andrew McCarthy, provides a comprehensive look at the Brat Pack and the profound impact it had on their personal and professional lives. In total, the Brat Pack includes Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. Mare Winningham is generally not considered a member since, while she starred in St. Elmo’s Fire, she has not appeared in another movie with any members.

After Brats became a hit, it was also reported that Sony is circling the possibility of making a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire. However, it would be contingent on reuniting the entire main cast, which wasn’t even possible for the documentary. However, the recent success of Brats and St. Elmo’s Fire on streaming shows there is still significant interest in seeing them on screen, and perhaps a sequel could be a theatrical event reminiscent of the original Brat Pack movies.
