However, any Star Trek fan will immediately recognize the actor as the holographic doctor from Deep Space 9 and Voyager. Even his role in Chuck, scanning a patient with vague advanced tech and examining the readings, is a way of paying tribute to this earlier character.

In Chuck season 3, a new threat rises to try and take the Intersect from Chuck in the form of the criminal organization known as The Ring. In “Chuck Versus the Tooth,” Chuck is assigned a CIA psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Dreyfus to assess if he is mentally capable of continuing to operate as an asset for the government. Dreyfus is played by the incredible Christopher Lloyd, who played Dr. Emmett Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy.

His role has few connections to what came before, aside from both characters having a PhD. However, this does give Chuck the opportunity to refer to the character by calling him “Doc,” which was the name that Marty McFly frequently used to refer to his friend. The subtle nature of this cameo makes it fun and engaging, and with Lloyd being such a recognizable figure, no further clues were necessary.

Jean-Claude, the man in possession of the vase, is played by the incredible Mark Hamill, who starred as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga and has continued to make waves as a prominent voice actor for animated villains like the Joker. His character in Chuck is more akin to the villains he plays as opposed to his most famous and heroic role, but this was a brilliant cameo from a show that had referenced Star Wars dozens of times during its run.

This organization was headed up by none other than the extraordinary and intelligent Gertrude Verbanski, played by Carrie-Anne Moss. Moss is best known for her role as Trinity in The Matrix franchise. In both roles, she plays a badass character who takes charge and saves the day, but the characters are also distinct enough to make them distinct. Either way, this was one of the best cameo characters in the entire series that only narrowly missed out on the top spot to one other guest appearance also in the final season.

However, when Beckman arrives with backup from the CIA, she reveals Shaw to be the mysterious enemy, and it sets up an interesting cameo moment. As many of the Marvel films began to be adapted, it became a tradition to feature Stan Lee in a small cameo role.
