1 Rand Scene I've Been Waiting To See Since Wheel Of Time Started Should Finally Happen In Season 3

Of all the great moments Rand is a part of in The Wheel of Time books, one that I’ve been eagerly anticipating since the start of the series should finally happen in season 3. There’s been much to look forward to when it comes to Rand al’Thor’s adventure, as Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books certainly provide a great blueprint for Prime Video’s show. Few of Rand’s stories have happened just as they did in the books, but several storylines he was involved with have already been adapted in some form.

More are sure to come as his arc continues to unfold. Now that the fight with Ishamael is in the rear-view mirror, the next most pressing stories to be told for Josha Stradowski’s character are the claiming of Callandor and his showdown with Asmodean in the Aiel Waste. Both seem likely for The Wheel of Time season 3, even though the exact placement of the former is a bit hard to discern. Both interest me greatly, but they’re far from the scenes with Rand that have a lot of live-action potential. There’s one in particular I’ve been waiting on for a long time, and I suspect it’ll finally be used in season 3.

Rand’s First Interaction With Lews Therin Could Be One Of Wheel Of Time’s Best Scenes

Although Lews Therin Telamon a.k.a. The Dragon and Rand are different versions of the same person, Rand eventually begins to hear the Dragon’s voice in his head. It starts with Rand having seemingly random thoughts that confuse him, but grows into something so much more overt. In The Shadow Rising, Rand hears Lews Therin tell him “Now,” during a Trolloc fight, and the sudden command directs him to unleash a remarkable display of his One Power abilities that shocks everyone around him (and himself). As time passes, Rand begins to hear Lews Therin’s voice at a more frequent rate.

As great as this moment was (and those that followed), I actually think it could be even more impactful in the TV show. After all, a live-action telling of the event has the advantage of conveying emotion in a much more straightforward manner; when imagining the implications of Rand hearing a stranger’s voice in his head, such a scene should be filled with all sorts of emotions. Hearing a voice, even if he knows it’s Lews Therin, should bring into focus an issue that should absolutely be at the forefront of Rand’s mind: Madness.

As Rand is well aware, the Madness is the supposedly unavoidable side effect of a man using the One Power in The Wheel of Time. Rand hasn’t spent much time worrying about that particular problem just yet, but hearing Lews Therin in his head should immediately change that. Rand grasping with the possibility of losing his mind, trying to identify the voice, and his conflict with it, are fodder for some of the most emotionally charged scenes the show could possibly deliver.

Rand May Be About To Reach A Shocking Realization

As for when Rand could start to hear the Dragon’s voice, the show hasn’t offered any breadcrumbs that tease this development – yet. That could imply it’s a long way off, but if the show starts building up to it within the next few episodes, it could occur later on in season 3. The timing would be about right, considering that The Wheel of Time is adapting The Shadow Rising next. The circumstances might differ depending on when Rand goes to the Stone of Tear, but it could happen nonetheless, especially since season 3 is sure to include situations as stressful as the Trolloc attack in the book.

To me, it would make sense for Rand’s interactions with Lews Therin to begin sooner rather than later. His worries about the Madness are key to his story, and Lews Therin’s voice is needed for that struggle to be depicted properly. It also plays into the concerns other characters will undoubtedly have about him going forward; because he’s the reincarnation of the person who caused the Breaking of the World, it’s only natural for the people around him to wonder if Rand is headed down that same path. Hearing a voice in his head will make it all the more difficult for Rand to avoid giving people that impression.

How Powerful Rand Al’Thor Is In Wheel Of Time (Books & TV Show)

Hints in The Wheel of Time show provide a glimpse at Rand al’Thor’s potential as well as a comparison to the book character’s power level.

Not only that, but The Wheel of Time hasn’t really done much with Lews Therin as of yet. Although a part of its past, Lews Therin’s status as the Dragon makes him the foundation of the narrative. I think it’s important for him to be a bit of an enigma at times, but neither of his two scenes captured the side of him that brought about the Breaking of the World or killed the woman he loved. I think it’s important for Wheel of Time to dive a little deeper into who Lews Therin was, and that’s ultimately why I think it’s unlikely that the show will continue using him solely in the opening scenes of its season finales. At some point, the pace of his appearances needs to change.

Why Lews Therin’s Role Could Be Different From The Books

What makes Rand’s reaction to hearing Lews Therin’s for the first time in The Wheel of Time even more interesting to me is the notion that it might be completely different from the Wheel of Time books. In the books, Lews Therin’s role in Rand’s life is essentially that of a disembodied voice, whereas the TV show could give him a physical presence. It already had an actor attached to the part, so a live-action Lews Therin communicating with Rand is hardly unfeasible. It could utilize him as a character whom only Rand can see and interact with, not unlike how most shows and movies incorporate hallucinations.

While Rand seeing Lews Therin in the flesh would have made little difference in a book format, the TV series can lean on that to create some truly riveting scenes. It’s worth pointing out that having an actor for Stradowski to play off when he’s having these conversations can only make these sequences better. Plus, the opportunity to present Lews Therin in his unhinged state should help the show get across to viewers what kind of person Rand can become if the Madness isn’t dealt with in The Wheel of Time’s future.
